Special Education Program
North Lakes State College Special Education Program is known within the college as the Advancement Centre. Our program operates within the P-9 Campus and the senior Urban learning Centre. These two separate locations meet the educational needs of students with a disability within one or more of the following areas:
- Intellectual Disability (ID)
- Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
- Speech-Language Impairment (SLI)
- Physical Impairment (PI)
- Hearing Impairment (HI) and
- Vision Impairment (VI).
North Lakes State College specializes in vision impairment with extensive resources, specialist personnel and specific programs of support. Special Education Programs offered at North Lakes Advancement Centre work within an inclusive education model where special education teachers and teacher aides work with class teachers to make educational adjustments to meet the learning needs of the student. Our philosophy on inclusive education is based on recognizing and responding to individual differences and ensuring programs of support are offered to meet the individual needs of the student. While some students will require a specialized and targeted instruction program, most students are provided a support model that is inclusive and is provided within the normal academic and social school environment. All student needs are identified, supported and reviewed with the close partnership of parents, class teachers, specialists, case managers and support staff.
