The Instrumental Music Program at North Lakes State College involves students from Years 4 to 12. Education Queensland provides specialist Instrumental Teachers on string (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind and brass (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba), and percussion (tuned and untuned percussion). Students who are involved in the program have one small group lesson (from three to ten students) per week during school hours and at least one large ensemble rehearsal per week which is usually held before school.

Currently there are several large ensembles including three string ensembles catering for students at different levels, three concert bands catering for students at different levels, and a stage band to extend the skill levels of more advanced students.

Students participate in various activities as part of the Instrumental Music Program including performances at school involving term concerts, the Academic Awards Evening and the Arts and Culture Evening. They also participate in competitions such as “Musicfest,” Fanfare and Urban Upbeat, and various community events such as markets, fetes, carnivals and performances at Westfield North Lakes.

District workshops are also held for primary school aged students where students can join with other schools and access the skills of many specialist teachers. Instrumental students have found success in events such as Fanfare and “MusicFest" with “Best Middle School Performance,” and platinum, gold and silver awards.

If you would like further information, please contact one of our Instrumental Music Teachers in The Arts Department at North Lakes State College.
